Astore Valley, with over 100 villages and spread over 5,092 sq. km of land, is 120 km long. It lies southeast of Gilgit and occupies the eastern side of Nanga Parbat (8,126), the magnificent peak. Historically, Gilgit-Baltistan was connected to the Indian subcontinent by the trade route of old Gilgit-Baltistan. Close to Kashmir, the route ends here. But, several meters later, the road was blocked by the snow.
The map’s three red markers indicate the most touristic spots in the valley: Rupal, Rama Lake, and Deosai Plains. A blue marker on a trading route heading to Kashmir marks the way. Due to centuries of colonization by several groups, Astore today has linguistic and cultural diversity, including a large population of Kashmiris who settled in the mountains. Gilgit-Baltistan includes several ethnic groups and cultures. Shina is one of the many languages spoken in this region. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the people are more closely related to Central Asia (especially Afghanistan and Tajikistan) than to the rest of Pakistan.

The renowned hospitality of Pakistan is magnified here, as many villagers have never encountered a foreigner.
Hosts may invite you to stay in their homes, offering food such as tea and lentils. The simple people in the more remote areas of Astore are often more likely to starve out of pride than to refuse you a meal. It is the unvarnished truth. When time is not a constraint, public transportation is the most convenient option for travel. Several old 4×4 pickups leave Gilgit City for Astore, the entry point to the valley. Be aware that the trip takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, and you will likely share the ride with 20 other passengers and their luggage. Schedules are not fixed, but you can inquire about approximate timings at the bus station the day before. However, based on my experience, these pickups can be up to 3 hours late. Additionally, hitchhiking is a good option due to the unpredictable schedules.

– Astore to Deosai Jeep Fare: Approximately Rs. 10,000, depending on your bargaining skills. If you wish to spend the night on Deosai Plain, a good camp will cost you Rs. 15,000 for two days.
– Travel Time: The journey from Astore to Deosai Plain takes about 4 to 5 hours by 4×4 jeep; personal vehicles will take longer.
– Astore to Skardu via Deosai: The journey takes 7 to 8 hours by 4×4 jeep.
– Distance from Astore to Skardu: Approximately 152 km, with an alternative route via the Skardu-Gilgit Road.
The road condition from Astore to Deosai is poor; personal cars and Hiace coasters are not allowed on this route. Hiring a jeep is advisable due to the bumpy terrain.
The distance from Astore to Rama Meadows is around 10 to 11 km. The jeeps take more than an hour to reach Rama Meadows and Lakes from Astore Valley.

The road is suitable only for 4×4 jeeps. A day is typically sufficient to visit Rama Meadows and Lakes, and many people enjoy camping here to witness the stunning night sky filled with stars.
Only 4×4 jeeps can traverse this bumpy road. The distance from Astore to Minimarg Valley and Minimarg Lake is approximately 39 km, taking 3 to 4 hours to cover one way.

A Jeep is the only vehicle you will be able to use to access the valley. Depending on your budget, renting a Jeep would be the best option. Negotiating the price will be a challenge, but you won’t be paying less than $50 or $60 a day.

It would be impossible to explore the valley thoroughly due to its enormous size. However, according to local Pakistanis, the places you should visit include Deosai Plains, Rama Lake, and Rupal. The problem is that while they are undoubtedly beautiful places, they are also reasonably commercial, as many hoteliers and other locals flock there to take advantage of the high season.

The road condition from Astore to Deosai is not in good condition. Personal Cars, Hiace, and Coasters are not recommended on this road. This road is too bumpy. Most of the road patches are poor and worse. One should hire a Jeep from Astore to the Deosai Plain.
