The Kachora Tso Lakes (Urdu: کچورہ جھیل) consist of three bodies of water located in the Skardu District of Gilgit-Baltistan, in northern Pakistan. These lakes, situated at an elevation of 2,500 meters (8,200 ft), include Foroq Tso (Upper Kachura Lake) and Lower Kachura Lake. The latter is often referred to as Shangrila Lake and is part of a tourist resort named Shangrila Resort located just outside Skardu. Additionally, there is a lake called Zambakha Tso situated in the small village of Zambakha, which is close to the Shangri-la area. The lakes are part of the Karakoram mountain range within the western Himalayas, which is the greater Baltistan Region, and they lie in the Indus River basin.
Foroq Tso (Lake) or Upper Kachura Lake features clear waters and has a depth of 70 meters (230 ft). During the summer months, the lake reaches a temperature of 15 °C (59 °F). In winter, the surface becomes completely frozen. The upper Indus River flows nearby at a lower elevation. The pristine beauty of Foroq Tso (Lake) remains largely unspoiled and is mostly untouched by travelers due to the challenging terrain and lack of infrastructure. The region is home to rich flora typical of the Western Himalayan subalpine conifer forests ecoregion, and it is also noted for its wild apricot – Prunus armeniaca – orchards. Recreational activities available at Foroq Tso or Upper Kachura Lake include hiking, trout fishing, and mountaineering in the Himalayas.
