This wooded area is recognized for its trio of lakes: Strangi Lake, Blue Lake, and Bodlok Lake, along with its mountainous terrain. Skiing is a favored activity in the foothills of the Naltar Mountains.
The Naltar Valley lies near the city of Gilgit and includes the communities of Naltar Bala (upper) and Naltar Paain (lower), situated about 34 kilometers (21 miles) and 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Gilgit, respectively. The Naltar Expressway links Naltar with Gilgit via Nomal and Faizabad, and a road from Nomal leads to China through the ‘Silk Route.’
The Naltar Wildlife Sanctuary is a designated protected area within the valley, established on November 22, 1975. It features a forested landscape, with montane coniferous forests in the higher altitudes and a mix of broadleaf and coniferous forests at lower elevations. Among the conifer species present are Picea and Juniperus, while trees such as Fraxinus, Olea, Pistacia, Sageretia, Betula, Salix, Populus, and Krascheninnikovia ceratoides can also be found.
Herbs like Artemisia, Haloxylon, and Stipa thrive in this region. The sanctuary is home to a few Astor markhor and an endangered type of wild goat, along with large mammals such as the Alpine ibex, snow leopard, brown bear, grey wolf, red fox, beech marten, and leopard cat. Nearly 35 bird species, including Brooks’s leaf warbler, have been documented in the valley.
The Naltar Lakes, located in the Naltar Valley, include Satrangi Lake, Halima Lake, Bodo Lake, Dhudia Lake, Pari Lake, and Blue Lake, situated 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) from Naltar Bala. The path from the village to the lakes is narrow and unpaved, running alongside a stream originating from the mountains. Accessing the lakes by vehicle during winter is nearly impossible due to the 10 to 15 feet of deep snow on the roads.
In Naltar Valley, several lakes known as Naltar Lakes, Blue Lakes, or Satrangi Lakes range in altitude from 3,050 to 3,150 metres (10,010 to 10,330 feet). Forests surround the lakes that are covered with pine trees. From May to October, the lakes are most pleasant to visit. Snowfall in the Naltar Valley makes access to the lake almost impossible during the winter months. While Naltar Valley does not have many big lakes, it has many beautiful scenic ones. Have you ever visited a place that seems like a part of heaven? That makes you wonder if an earthy place is that beautiful then how mesmerising the Heaven would be?
I have once visited a place like that and we all call it Naltar. I don’t know what Naltar means, but if ever I get the opportunity to put the meaning, I will definitely call it “The Earthy Heaven’ This is how beautiful Naltar is.
Blue Lake, Satrangi Lake, and Pari Lake all got my heart. The beauty of the valley cannot be captured in any camera or words. It can be a version of someone’s heaven. The forest-like places, the water streams, and the weather… Everything was enchanting. It is not possible for you to go there and will not wish to spend eternity.
I will definitely go there again and spend more time there.
What was the best part? There was no internet connectivity. Not at least for tourists. The place is just to cut your ties from the digital world and praise Allah for how beautifully he made the earth for his people.
You can visit all the beautiful places in our Northern Areas Tour Packages at affordable prices. There are many scenic places to visit in Naltar Valley:
Multi colours surround the lake within this mountain range due to the mountain surface, which is called Multicolor or Satrangi Lake. Rainbows are often spotted near lakes. Naltar Lakes contain several lakes referred to as the rainbow lakes, mostly due to the colourful scenery.
Satarngi Lake is adjacent to this lake, which has a blue colour. In the next lake, also known as Blue Star Lake, there is water described as bright blue. Despite its blue colour and clarity, the water is free of pollution. A distance of 1 km separates the blue star lake from the rainbow lake. There are three deep lakes, but this is the deepest.
