Kumrat Valley, often referred to as a fairyland, is a hidden gem that attracts millions of tourists every summer. While there are many luxurious destinations in Pakistan, Kumrat Valley is especially stunning. Although it may not be well-known, it is definitely a must-visit for nature lovers.
Located in the Upper Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this valley is famous for its lush green pastures and snow-capped mountains. Visitors can enjoy the enchanting river Panjkora, fog-laden hills, and rich forests, which are home to diverse flora and fauna.
Kumrat Valley boasts cool weather, refreshing waters, and breathtaking scenery. The region offers serene freshwater bodies and a truly unforgettable, peaceful environment. Visitors can reach Kumrat from the Kalam side via the Badgoi Pass. The Jeep fare from Kalam to Kumrat Valley ranges from PKR 14,000 to PKR 16,000, which includes one night’s stay in Kumrat.
The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Additionally, attractions such as Bara Dand Lake, Panjkora Stream, Dojanga, Thal in Upper Dir, Jahaz Banda, Do Kala Chashma, and Katora Lake can be explored. The Jeep fare from Thal to Kumrat Forest is between PKR 7,000 and PKR 8,000, also including one night’s stay. The best time to visit Kumrat is from June to October.
If you have your own vehicle, you won’t face any difficulties changing transport multiple times. A 70cc bike or a 2WD car can reach Kumrat (up to Thal).
For those relying on public transport, the journey begins in Mardan, where you’ll catch a vehicle to Timergara (Hiace/Coaster). From Timergara, take a vehicle to Sheringal, a major town in Upper Dir with a university. From Sheringal, you can rent a Fielder/Probox to get to Thal. Finally, from Thal, you will need to book a Jeep to reach Kumrat Valley.
Travel from Lahore via the M-2 Motorway to Islamabad, then take the Swat Expressway (Colonel Sher Khan Interchange) towards Chakdara, Timergara, Dir, Bab-e-Kumrat, Thal, and finally to Kumrat Forest.
Drive from Lahore via the M-2 Motorway to Islamabad, proceed to Colonel Sher Khan Interchange, and take the Swat Expressway to Chakdara, then Mingora, Bahrain, Kalam Valley, and the Badgoi Pass to reach Kumrat Jungle.
I recently visited Kumrat Valley for the second time and was captivated by the lush green mountains, trees, and streams. I find this scenery far more beautiful than the rugged, dry, stony mountains typically seen in most areas of Gilgit.
If I had to choose the most beautiful place for its greenery, it would definitely be Kumrat, especially Jahaz Banda. The trek to this area is breathtaking, and to my surprise, it was very clean compared to other treks in Pakistan, likely because it is not as popular as Fairy Meadows.
The road is smooth all the way to Dir, though you will encounter a few worn-out patches near Thal. Upon reaching Thal, you must park your car in the designated parking area and then take a 4×4 jeep to either Kumrat Forest or Jahaz Banda, depending on your destination. Be sure to check the climate and season before visiting.
